A ferryboat has sunk in waters of Riau Islands after hitting a reef, only 30 minutes after it had left Sribintan Pura harbor in Tanjungpinang on Thursday evening.

Dozens of passengers were rescued to another boat.

The ill-fated vessel, Dragon 6, had been on its way to Batam – only an hour away, when the crash happened.

“I don’t know what the exact location was. It was really dark,” Andi, one of the passengers, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

The head of the Batam Search and Rescue Team, Isdhira, said the accident had occurred near Nginang Island.

“Every passenger has been rescued and brought to Batam on the ship Oceana 9. Every single one is safe and sound,” Isdhira said.
