Police officers responded by shouting out warnings to protesters taking position in the department store.
rotesters started throwing firecrackers at police officers guarding the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) building on Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday evening as post-election tensions continue after protests on Tuesday turned into a full-fledged riot.
According to Antara news agency, the firecrackers were shot by protesters standing at the intersection of Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Wahid Hasyim, and another protester standing on the rooftop of Sarinah department store.
Police officers responded by shouting out warnings to protesters taking position in the department store.
Hundreds of police personnel guarding Bawaslu headquarters took cover behind their shields while warning protestors to stay calm and not be provoked by the firecrackers.
Tensions escalated after police personnel told protesters to disperse after dawn prayers.
Ignoring the warning, protestors started throwing water bottles, stones and eventually firecrackers at security forces.
Minutes after the first clash on Tuesday, tensions defused as protesters and security personnel recited salawat (Islamic chats) together only to re-escalate not long after. (kuk)
