Prabowo Subianto paid a visit to the grave of his father-in-law, former president Soeharto, at the Astana Giribangun cemetery in Karanganyar, Central Java, on Monday.
Gerindra Party head Prabowo Subianto paid a visit to the grave of his father-in-law, former president Soeharto, at the Astana Giribangun cemetery in Karanganyar, Central Java, on Monday.
Prabowo was accompanied by his son, Didiet Hediprasetyo, and several Central Java politicians, including former governor Bibit Waluyo, Gerindra regional branch head Abdul Wachid and party secretary Sriyanto Saputro.
Upon his arrival at the cemetery, Prabowo was welcomed by dozens of people who had supported him in the April presidential election, which lost to the incumbent, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
He was shown around the cemetery by caretaker Sukirno.
Besides visiting the graves of his former in-laws, Soeharto and his wife Tien, Sukirno said that Prabowo also visited the graves of Tien’s parents Soemoharjomo and Hatmanti Hatmohoedojo as well as Tien’s siblings.
Sukirno said Prabowo had visited the graves specifically to pray.
Prabowo did not say much to the reporters at the cemetery, only that it was “a family matter.”
"It's a family affair. From Jakarta, [Prabowo’s entourage] arrived in Surakarta and directly went here. Now they're heading to the airport to go home," said Sriyanto at the cemetery.
Prabowo married Soeharto’s daughter Siti Hediati Haryadi, popularly known as Titiek Soeharto, in 1983 and had one son Didiet, born in 1984. The couple separated not long after Soeharto’s fall in 1998. (kmt)
