Two Thai nationals were arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into Bali -- by swallowing it.
wo Thai nationals have been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into Bali. The suspects -- Prakob Seetang, 29, and Adison Phonlamat, 20 -- tried to smuggle the drugs by swallowing almost 1 kg of sabu (methamphetamine).
They were arrested upon arrival at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport on Air Asia flight FD 398 from Bangkok in the early morning of May 13. Airport custom officers were suspicious of the two persons based on the custom's profiling system.
However, custom officers did not find any suspicious items when they passed the X-Ray machine. They conducted a body search and found nothing suspicious either.
"We decided to take the suspects to the hospital for a roentgen, which found something suspicious in the suspects' digestive tracts," Bali and Nusa Tenggara Custom and Excise Office head Untung Basuki told a press conference on Monday.
After a medical procedure to remove the drugs, it was found that Seetang had swallowed 47 capsules of methamphetamine weighing 482.46 grams. Phonlamat had swallowed 51 capsules of methamphetamine weighing 507.02 grams.
Untung said the suspects had taken a big risk by swallowing the drugs. "If the drug capsules broke inside their stomach, it would be very dangerous for both of them. They could have died," he said.
An official at Bali's National Narcotic Agency (BNN), Adj. Sr. Comr. Nyoman Sebudi, said BNN investigators would conduct further investigations.
