A young busker was found dead in what appeared to be a drowning case in Pancoran Mas district in Depok, West Java, on Monday.

Local residents found the body of the boy, identified as 9-year-old Ahmad Fahri, on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and some were shocked by the discovery, Pancoran Mas Police chief Comr. Roni Wowor said.

A preliminary police investigation found that the boy, who regularly busked in the area, fell into the water of near a sluice gate soon after giving some of his money to a friend.

“After his friend received Rp 7,000 (US 49 cents) from Fahri, the friend turned to walk home, leaving him behind,” Roni said on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.

Fahri ran to catch up with his friend, but slipped and fell into the river.

“He [Fahri] was running behind his friend and suddenly the friend heard a big splash and thought that someone was falling into the river,” he said, saying that the water reached 160-centimeter in depth.

Locals filed report to the local police after learning about the incidence.

“When we checked we saw the body floating in the river, we saw locals pulling the body out,” Roni said.

Fahri's parents later arrived at the scene and identified the body, which they then took home for burial. The family has declined to have an autopsy performed on the body. (das)
