Body of former first lady Ani Yudhoyono arrives in Jakarta

The Yudhoyono family has expressed its appreciation for the outpouring of support by all sections of the nation following the news of Ani's passing.

he remains of former first lady Kristiani Herrawati, known to the nation as Ani Yudhoyono, arrived at 10 p.m. on Saturday at Halim Perdana Kusuma Air Base in Jakarta.

The flag-draped casket containing her body was transported from Singapore, where she had been treated for blood cancer since February, on board an Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft. Former president and Democratic Party chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his two sons accompanied Ani on her final journey back to Indonesia.

The former president and his family were welcomed by ministers, regional leaders and party members at the airport.

The funeral service will take place at the Yudhoyono family home in Cikeas in Bogor, West Java.

Ani will be buried with military honors in a ceremony led by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Sunday.

The Yudhoyono family has expressed its appreciation for the outpouring of support by all sections of the nation following the news of Ani's passing.

In a written statement, Ani’s eldest son Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono thanked friends of the family and the Indonesian people for their condolences and sympathy following the death of his mother.

"On behalf of my mother, I would like to ask for your forgiveness if she ever hurt your feelings with her words or actions. We ask for you to pray that God may forgive her sins and welcome her," he said.

Agus added that while she had been battling blood cancer, Ani continued to think only of her family and the Indonesian people.

"Until the end of her life, she always kept up with news regarding the country. She was happy when the people were happy and she was sad when the people were in sorrow," he said.

Ani died at 67 years old in Singapore at 11:50 a.m. local time on Saturday. (swd)
