Mayasari Bakti penalizes bus driver for letting people ride on top

In the viral video, which was circulated on Instagram, the teenagers could be seen struggling to get off the bus as it entered the Tanah Abang underpass in Central Jakarta and the space between the vehicle and the top of the structure began to narrow.

ransjakarta subsidiary Mayasari Bakti has punished one of its drivers for letting a group of minors ride on top of a bus in a takbiran (recitation of “Allah is great” on the eve of Idul Fitri) convoy on Tuesday evening.

Operational manager of Mayasari Bakti Daryono said on Friday that the company required the driver to pay Rp 1.2 million (US$84.40) to repair the damages caused by around 10 youngsters sitting on top of the bus.

“Those youngsters have damaged the top of the bus. The estimated loss is Rp 1.2 million,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

In the viral video, which was circulated on Instagram, the teenagers could be seen struggling to get off the bus as it entered the Tanah Abang underpass in Central Jakarta and the space between the vehicle and the top of the structure began to narrow.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan plans to formulate a regulation that forbids people from riding on top of vehicles after the reports.

“We will formulate a special regulation so that drivers will not let people ride on top of buses,” Anies said on Wednesday. (das/jun)
