Former Army chief George Toisutta dies at 66

George Toisutta, the former chief of the Army, has died after a long struggle with colon cancer.

Former Indonesian Army chief Gen. (Ret.) George Toisutta died on Wednesday morning at the Gatot Subroto Hospital in Jakarta.

"It is true, former Army chief Gen. (Ret.) George Toisutta has died," Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Chandra Wijaya said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Toisutta had long suffered from colon cancer. He was 66 years old.

His remains will be transferred from Jakarta to Makassar, South Sulawesi, through Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. The body will be laid to rest in Makassar at Jl. Rutan No. 80 Gunung Sari, while the burial will take place at Dadi Cemetery on Jl. Lanto Daeng Pasewang Makassar.

Toisutta served as Army chief from November 2009 to June 2011. He previously led the Army Strategic Reserves Command from 2007 to 2009. (gis)
