“I started the match a little slow but I managed to improve the pace before finally defeating [Sokolov],” Medina told the press after the match in Yogyakarta.
oman grandmaster Medina Warda Aulia put on a stunning performance in the second round of the 2019 JAPFA Grandmaster and Women Grandmaster Chess Tournament, defeating grandmaster Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands in a match on Friday.
The two battled it out for 3.5 hours before the host player, who has an Elo rating of 2375, dominated Sokolov (Elo 2595).
“I started the match a little slow but I managed to improve the pace before finally defeating [Sokolov],” Medina told the press after the match in Yogyakarta.
Medina forced Sokolov to end his run on the 38th move. The Indonesian played the white confidently, deploying the king to push back her opponent’s defense.
In the opening round on Thursday, Medina lost to Rustam Khusnutdinov of Kazakhstan (Elo 2471).
“I did not deliver [on Thursday] because of anemia,” revealed the 21-year-old.
Medina, who admitted to playing without pressure, said she decided to play in the grandmaster category as she no longer had any targets in the women grandmaster pool. Her goal was to improve her skills by playing against players who have Elo ratings above 2400.
