The government has said it will accelerate the development of tourism facilities in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, to attract more visitors.
Labuan Bajo is among tourist destinations dubbed the 10 "new Balis".
All 10 destinations are considered priorities for infrastructure development, with projects in Labuan Bajo, Toba Lake in North Sumatra, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java having been accelerated for completion in 2020.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said the government would accelerate the construction of Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo to accommodate more flights to the area.
"We will [build] a bigger terminal and lengthen the runway," said Jokowi in Labuan Bajo on Wednesday, adding that construction would be completed next year.
Aside from expanding the airport and building an international terminal, the airport's development plan includes improving the domestic terminal's capacity and the airport's parking area.
Jokowi also said the government was open to handing over the airport's management to an international operator with deep expertise in tourism through a tender.
The development of tourism facilities was important, said Jokowi, as the government hoped Labuan Bajo would attract foreign tourists. (bbn)
