fter a thorough review, the Health Ministry has lowered the accreditation level of 615 hospitals across the country, which is expected to cut down on the soaring number of hospital claims that have caused a perpetual deficit to the National Health Insurance (JKN) program.

The ministry came to the decision to downgrade about a quarter of 2,170 hospitals that have partnered with the Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan), which operates the JKN,  after it evaluated the hospitals’ human resources, facilities and equipment and found certain hospitals did not match the standards required by the status.

The Health Ministry’s director general for health services, Bambang Wibowo, said the review was in line with Presidential Regulation No. 82/2018 on the JKN, which stipulates that a hospital's credentials is subject to review and must be reported to the ministry.

He said updating the hospitals’ credentials was important because the insurer’s referral system was based on this information.

“Sometimes we find that a hospital’s accreditation does not match its real conditions. That’s why this review is important so we can manage hospital services better. With the right information, we could also give the right referral hospital information to the patients,” he said.

BPJS Kesehatan has built a partnership with 2,170 state and private hospitals, with accreditation levels from A to D. Grade A is given to hospitals with the best resources, facilities, equipment and services. There are 56 hospitals in Grade A, 358 in Grade B, 1,164 in Grade C and 592 in Grade D.

After the review, the ministry recommended to downgrade 9 hospitals from Grade A, 88 from Grade B, 325 from Grade C and 193 from Grade D.
