In Tangerang, Banten, 74,000 of its 2.1 million residents are unemployed, while in South Tangerang, 40,000 of its 1.64 million residents are unemployed.
ven though rapid development of Jakarta’s satellite cities in recent years has resulted in economic growth that has spurred jobs and demand for skilled workers, unemployment remains an issue.
In Tangerang, Banten, 74,000 people of its 2.1 million inhabitants were unemployed, according to 2018 data from the Tangerang Manpower Agency.
Known as "the City of a Thousand Industries”, the city administration announced it would transition into becoming a service-oriented city on its 26th anniversary in February.
Tackling unemployment was one of the main focuses of the agency, worker placement head Iing Riskomar said on Tuesday.
In a bid to connect workers to companies, the administration held a job fair involving 55 companies from Tuesday to Thursday at the Bale Kota shopping mall in Buaran Indah subdistrict.
“At this year’s event, there were 8,452 vacancies for jobs ranging from factory workers and customer service [employees] to flight attendants and golf caddies. There are jobs for applicants from all educational backgrounds,” Iing told The Jakarta Post.
The administration pinned hopes that fresh vocational school and university graduates would seize the opportunities available at the job fair.
