With its rapid development and complete public facilities, the city also has a considerable city budget, reaching Rp 3.7 trillion this year, compared to hundreds of other cities.
ne year before the next simultaneous regional elections, some are eyeing the top post in Greater Jakarta’s youngest satellite city, South Tangerang.
South Tangerang is among 270 regions across the archipelago that will hold regional elections to elect their new leaders in 2020.
Affectionately referred to as Tangsel by locals, the city used to be part of Tangerang regency but was declared a new administrative city in 2008.
Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany and Deputy Mayor Benyamin Davnie have been at the helm since they won the two only elections in the municipality, held for the first time in 2011. They are currently serving their second and final term from 2016 to 2021.
Airin has long been under scrutiny regarding her connection to former Banten governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah as she is married to Atut’s younger brother. Atut and her family have been lambasted for running a political dynasty in Banten as many of their family members held top spots in regional administrations and local councils in the province.
The names of several people vying for the mayoral spot have been circulating, including new figures besides those familiar to South Tangerang people.
Among the old names are Benyamin, city secretary Muhammad and city councillor Siti Chadijah from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), tribunnews.com reported.
