he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has arrested five employees of state-owned enterprises and seized Rp 1 billion (US$70,847) worth of Singapore dollars.

KPK deputy chairman Basaria Panjaitan said the arrest, which was based on a tip-off, was made on Wednesday night in South Jakarta.

Basaria said the five people were employees – including executives – of airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II and telecommunication company PT INTI.

He said the transaction might relate to a project carried out by PT INTI.

The suspects are reportedly being questioned intensively at the KPK building.

The State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry issued a press statement saying it respected the law and would assist the KPK if needed in the legal procedures.

Gatot Trihargo, the ministry’s undersecretary of financial services, survey services and consulting services, said all activities by SOEs should be done in accordance with good corporate governance.

He added that the SOE Ministry had asked Angkasa Pura II and PT INTI (Persero) to ensure their operational activities proceed normally for the benefit of society.

In a similar statement, Angkasa Pura II said it respected the legal procedure and questioning of its finance director by the corruption watchdog and would make sure the case would not affect its operations. (gis)
