he Indonesian government has reopened its market to shipments of Brazilian chicken following a dispute settlement by the World Trade Organization (WTO), which ruled in favor of Brazil on the matter.
Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said his office would look into possible trade remedies upon opening the market access so that the country could maintain its domestic supply.
"We will keep our regulations open” to imported chicken from Brazil, Enggartiasto said on Wednesday. "Then, [we will apply] trade remedies such as halal certification and things that do not breach the WTO's rules."
The dispute was listed under code DS 484 on measures concerning the importation of chicken meat and chicken products.
Brazil challenged Indonesia over the issue at the WTO in 2014 and won the dispute in 2017. However, Brazil went back to the WTO again after Indonesia did not immediately open its market, leading to the settlement.
Enggar further stated that Brazil would be authorized to expedite retaliatory measures should Indonesia not comply with the WTO ruling.
