T

he Jakarta High Court has ruled upon appeal to increase Irwandi Yusuf's sentence by one year, a ruling that comes three months after the suspended Aceh governor was found guilty of accepting bribes and illicit gifts totaling nearly Rp 10 billion (US$700,615) over two gubernatorial terms.

The appellate court on Wednesday issued its ruling to increase to eight years the seven-year prison sentence the Jakarta Corruption Court had handed Irwandi in April.

"The defendant Irwandi Yusuf has been formally and convincingly found guilty of corruption for receiving bribes and illicit gifts on several occasions," read the Jakarta High Court's ruling on the official website of the Supreme Court, reported Antara News.

The court also extended the ban against Irwandi on running for public office from three to five years after serving his prison sentence, and demanded that he pay the Rp 300 million fine or spend an additional three months in jail.

However, the increased sentence was still lighter than the 10-year prison term and Rp 500 million fine that Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors demanded during Irwandi's trial.

The Jakarta Corruption Court issued in April a guilty verdict against Irwandi for accepting Rp 1.05 billion in bribes from Bener Meriah Regent Ahmadi in exchange for awarding several infrastructure projects in the regency to certain companies. The court also found that Irwandi was proven guilty of receiving Rp 8.7 billion in gratuities from a number of businessmen during his governorship. (tru/afr)
