With the premiere of Gundala just around the corner, entertainment company Bumilangit and production company Screenplay Films unveiled seven upcoming superhero films on Sunday that include Sri Asih starring Pevita Pearce, Mandala starring Joe Taslim, Godam starring Chicco Jerikho and Si Buta dari Gua Hantu (Warrior from the Ghost Cave).

In addition to the films, the companies also announced the cast lineup for other characters in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, including Nicholas Saputra as Aquanus, Dian Sastrowardoyo as Dewi Api, Zara JKT48 as Virgo and Hannah Al Rashid as Camar.

Bumilangit is the intellectual property holder of 1,100 comic characters that have been published since 1954.

The characters are grouped into four eras: Legenda (legend), Jawara (warrior), Patriot (patriot) and Revolusi (revolution).

As reported by Kompas.com, Bumilangit creative producer Joko Anwar said that the upcoming films would come from the Jawara and Patriot eras.

Bumilangit production manager Imansyah Lubis told The Jakarta Post on Monday that they planned to release one or two films every year.

Si Buta dari Gua Hantu is currently in the casting process, while Sri Asih is at the script development stage,” said Imansyah.

He explained that Joko would supervise all the films in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, although he might not be the director of the films.

Si Buta dari Gua Hantu will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto,” he said, citing an example.

Imansyah said that the companies had yet to decide on which films would be launched following Gundala as it would depend on the production development.

He also mentioned that they chose the films based on their popularity.

Sri Asih is the first heroine comic in Indonesia [created in 1954]. It has a long history and it would be fun [to create the film] now,” he said.

Gundala was highly popular and the movie adaptation directed by Joko Anwar will come out on Aug. 29. “On our roadshows [for the film] in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, people were already familiar [with the character],” he said.

With that in mind, Imansyah considered that Gundala was the right character to be the gateway to other superhero films in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe.
