Twivortiare is set to stir moviegoers’ hearts with its love triangle story starring Reza Rahadian, Raihaanun and Denny Sumargo. This August seems to be a prime month for Indonesian cinema, with a number of high-profile movies set to hit theaters.
Bracing for tough competition from period drama Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind) and superhero flick Gundala is Twivortiare, which sees A-listers Reza, Raihaanun and Denny caught in a love triangle.
Set to hit theaters on Aug. 29, the movie is a condensed adaptation of Ika Natassa’s two popular novels — Divortiare and its sequel Twivortiare.
Directed by Benni Setiawan, the romantic drama follows the relationship of workaholic surgeon Beno Wicaksono (Reza) and successful banker Alexandra Rhea (Raihaanun) and their whirlwind romance of dating, marriage and eventual divorce when Alexandra then finds a new flame in Denny Ibrahim (Denny).
Reza says that moviegoers can easily relate to the story as most people have experienced the ups and downs of a romantic relationship.
“[The movie] will resonate with a lot of people, and I want to convey something that is very honest,” Reza said during the cast’s visit to The Jakarta Post recently.
“The movie doesn’t touch on the dating aspect, but rather their married life and divorce. However, as to why Beno decides to rekindle the relationship, you’ll have to see the movie yourself,” Reza said with a smile.
This is not the first time Reza has starred in a silver screen adaptation of one of Ika’s novels. Two years ago, he starred in Critical Eleven, which shined in the box office with over 880,000 viewers.
Reza said he was drawn into Ika’s unique way of portraying romance realistically.
“I myself have a penchant for realism, so it’s always a yes from me. When I received the scenario and read it, I thought about all the things that could happen in the story, and I simply couldn’t say no.”
For Raihaanun, the romance drama marks a step toward something lighter and more enjoyable after her challenging role as a rape victim in the critically acclaimed 27 Steps of May.
The actress said that she could easily relate to the character of Alex as she is herself a wife, adding that the conflicts in domestic life are very relatable and organic.
“For me, the opening scene is quite ‘heavy’ and unforgettable, but I wouldn’t be able to describe it lest I spoil the plot,” Raihaanun, who is married to director Teddy Soeriaatmadja, said knowingly.
Basketballer-turned-actor Denny Sumargo describes his character as “husband material”.
“He has everything in life, except perhaps someone he can call a life mate. He’s not interested in merely a pretty face, but rather someone who can understand him deeply and vice versa,” Denny said.
With the novels’ best-selling status, the stakes are high for the actors to live up to the readers’ and audience’s expectations. However, Denny said that he wasn’t burdened by these expectations.
“From the beginning, I enjoyed the process with all the other cast members, and I’m the kind of actor that lives in the moment; by that I mean that I don’t want to have all kinds of thoughts or become someone people think I should be, as well as straying from what is expected by the director.”
