“He was an important part of Padang State University; a resilient person who always approached social issues with scientific methods.”
Historian-cum-anticorruption activist Mestika Zed has died following a heart attack on Sunday. He was 64 years old.
Ermanto, a colleague at Padang State University, said Mestika was immediately rushed to the Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital in Padang, West Sumatra, after he experienced an abrupt cardiac arrest.
Mestika passed away in the hospital at 8:40 a.m.
“It was a heart attack. It suddenly happened just this morning,” Ermanto told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
Padang State University rector Ganefri said Mestika had previously complained about a breathing problem, but other than that he was in prime condition.
“We lost a great teacher today. [Mestika] was a figure of integrity who cared deeply about national history, including that of West Sumatra,” Ganefri said as quoted by Antara news agency.
