Bidara Cina residents have no intention of hindering the government’s project, especially if it is for the good of the people.
Four years standing idle, the construction of a tunnel connecting the Ciliwung River and the East Flood Canal will resume as the government has decided to put an end to the legal dispute over land acquisition in East Jakarta, and is ready to pay compensation money to the residents.
The tunnel is a project under the Public Works and Housing Ministry – represented by the ministry's Ciliwung-Cisadane Flood Control Office (BBWSCC) – as a part of a flood mitigation project, in particular to ease the severe flooding that occasionally occurs in Bidara Cina.
The Jakarta administration and BBWSCC in August and September respectively withdrew their cassation appeal against the Jakarta State Administrative Court's ruling in favor of plaintiffs -- Bidara Cina residents -- over the land acquisition process for the project, making the ruling dated May 27 legally binding.
“The Jakarta governor will issue a new decree on the location of [the tunnel],” BBWSCC head Bambang Hidayah told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Governor Anies Baswedan said the cancellation of the legal avenue was intended to resume the project as soon as possible.
“I have been communicating with the President since last year and we agreed not to continue [the legal avenue],” he told reporters on Thursday.
