A member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has made history as the first Indonesian of Chinese descent to lead the Medan Council (DPRD). Fifty two-year-old Huang Kien Lim, also known as Hasyim, was elected speaker of the Medan DPRD for the 2019–2024 period during a plenary session on Tuesday. Ihwan Ritonga from the Gerindra Party, Rajuddin Sagala from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and Bahrumsyah from the National Mandate Party were elected as deputy speakers to serve alongside Hasyim. Hasyim thanked PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri for recommending him for the position.
