member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has made history as the first Indonesian of Chinese descent to lead the Medan Council (DPRD).
Fifty two-year-old Huang Kien Lim, also known as Hasyim, was elected speaker of the Medan DPRD for the 2019–2024 period during a plenary session on Tuesday. Ihwan Ritonga from the Gerindra Party, Rajuddin Sagala from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and Bahrumsyah from the National Mandate Party were elected as deputy speakers to serve alongside Hasyim.
Hasyim thanked PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri for recommending him for the position. He vowed to take full responsibility and do his best in carrying out his duties to improve the city council's performance within the next five years.
“This is my commitment. I will optimize the legislative, budgeting and controlling roles. We will also improve synergy between legislative and executive functions, so that the government will run smoothly,” he told the Post on Wednesday.
He also said the council should do its best to positively impact the wellbeing of the people of Medan. Therefore, Hasyim went on to say, the council should improve its performance to fulfil the people’s aspirations.
“Public trust in the councilors has been decreasing over time. Hence, we should work harder to increase their trust by meeting their aspirations,” Hasyim said.
Was reelected as a Medan DPRD member for the third time after gaining 16,376 votes from Medan IV electoral district.
