Indonesia's Aries Susanti Rahayu claimed the women's speed climbing championship and the world record from world No. 1 Yi Ling Song of China in less than 7 seconds.
ndonesian sport climber Aries Susanti Rahayu won the women's speed category of the IFSC Climbing World Cup on Saturday in Xianmen, China, beating China's Yi Ling Song in the final to also claim the new world record of 6.995 seconds.
Aries had a solid grip and faster start, leaving Yi behind as the final began.
“We are grateful for Aries' achievement today, both the gold medal and for breaking the world record,” said Asep Rachmat, sport climbing national team manager, on Saturday.
Yayan continued that Aries was the first woman sport climber to clock in at less than 7 seconds.
World No. 1 Yi came in second with 9.302 seconds. Yi had claimed the world record of 7.101 seconds at the IFSC Climbing World Cup Chongqing in April.
Russian sport climber Maria Krasavina placed third with 7.947 seconds.
Aries commented that becoming the world record holder was far beyond her expectations, but that it was one of her dreams as a professional athlete.
"I am very grateful for these achievement and also for the endless supports," she told The Jakarta Post.
