ndonesian cyclist Bernard Benyamin van Aert secured two medals in the Asian Tracks Championship in Jincheon, South Korea, which was held from Oct. 17 to 22. Bernard won silver for the point race and bronze in the scratch race category.
“[I’m] Grateful that all the rigorous training has been fruitful. This has been a breakthrough for Indonesian cycling and likely the first time that we have won medals in the elite category,” Bernard said as quoted by Antara news agency on Monday.
Bernard said he had spent the last few months training in Jogjakarta and Jakarta. He acknowledged that his family, coaches, sponsors and supporters were pivotal contributors to his victory.
“What’s next on the schedule is working and training harder to secure tickets for next year’s championships,” he said without elaboration.
The tournament has also been a medium for athletes to secure a spot in the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Besides Bernard, Indonesia has deployed several other senior cyclists, namely Crismonita Dwi Putri, Elga Kharisma Novanda, Puguh Admadi and Terry Yuda Kusuma. Junior cyclists like Angga Dwi Wahyu, Barley Oktavian and Mochammad Bintang Syawal have also joined the squad.
In the same arena, Indonesian paracyclist Muhammad Fadli Imammudin also won two medals: a gold medal from the individual pursuit (IP) 4,000-meter event and a silver in the IP 1,000-m.
