T

he company tasked with developing the Greater Jakarta LRT (LRT Jabodebek) is picking up its pace as it aims for a 2021 operational target and with construction more than half complete.

According to publicly listed state-owned builder PT Adhi Karya Tbk, the project is 55.13 finished as of Oct. 4 and the first LRT train has been placed at Harjamukti Station in Cibubur, East Jakarta.

The Greater Jakarta LRT, not to be confused with LRT Jakarta that operates in the eastern part of the capital, has a total of three construction stages. Progress for the Cawang-Cibubur route is at 85.7 percent, while the tracks connecting Cawang to Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta and Cawang to East Bekasi in West Java have progressed 56.1 percent and 59.5 percent, respectively.

The first phase is 43.3 kilometers long and costs Rp 22.8 trillion (US$ 1.62 billion). President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo kicked off constriction with a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2015.

The trains are manufactured by state-owned PT Industri Kereta Api Indonesia (INKA) in Madiun, East Java, with 60 percent of its materials locally sourced, in line with the local content requirement (TKDN).

LRT Jabodebek will operate 31 trains, each with six cars and a capacity of some 1,500 passengers. The service is expected to help alleviate congestion in Jakarta and its satellite cities.

On Oct. 13, PT INKA shipped six trains to Jakarta.
