The implementation of a 2-1 traffic scheme on Jl. Raya Puncak in Bogor regency, West Java, showed mixed results during a trial on Sunday. While Puncak-bound traffic flowed faster during the trial, people returning from the popular tourist destination were trapped in severe congestion.
During the trial run for the 2-1 traffic system, the Bogor Police divided the 22 kilometer road through what it dubbed traffic canalization from two lanes into three lanes from the Gadog intersection to the Taman Safari Indonesia intersection, using around 1,000 traffic cones.
From 3 a.m. to 1 p.m., the first and the second lanes were designated for vehicles from Jakarta heading to Puncak, while the third lane was for vehicles heading the opposite direction. Then, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. the second and third lanes were designated for vehicles returning from Puncak.
The measure aims to reduce infamous congestion on the Puncak road every weekend, replacing the decades-old one-way traffic system, which was deemed ineffective in easing congestion.
Trisakti University urban development expert Yayat Supriatna said the system had indeed reduced travel time to Puncak.
“With the 2-1 system, people could access the road at any time without having to wait 3-4 hours for the one-way traffic system to be over. As a result, the travel time could be reduced to 1.5 hours,” he said.
Bogor Regent Ade Yasin expressed a similar view. He said the traffic to Puncak had been lighter during the trial of the 2-1 system, especially in the areas of Selarong, Gadong and Cisarua.
