Former New Zealand bowler and popular cricket commentator Danny Morrison was the chief guest at the Jakarta Cricket Association’s (JCA) annual JCA Gala Dinner held on Saturday at Hotel LeMeridien. Morrison spoke about the importance of both vision and resilience in the pursuit of success in sport and shared several anecdotes from his own life to illustrate the point.

Vision and resilience were also key themes of this past season, which saw history being made with Yadavas Chairos Tigers becoming the first fully Indonesian team to win the league. Their success marked the culmination of a long journey, one that started with a vision for the development of cricket in the country. Several volunteers and well-wishers joined this journey at various points to keep the efforts constantly moving forward and it was this passion and resilience that bore fruit this season.

Sachin Gopalan, a three-term JCA president and key figure in this journey due to his contributions both financially and through wisdom and passion, was rewarded with the JCA Lifetime Achievement Award. Avakash Lohia, also a three-term JCA president and longtime supporter and contributor to the cause of cricket development in Indonesia, was also rewarded with the JCA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The JCA also recognized and rewarded Ni Made Putri Suwandewi for the extraordinary honor of being selected to the ICC Global Women’s Development squad. She joined the squad in training in Australia and had the opportunity to play against many of the Women’s Big Bash League squads. Her selection also marked the meteoric rise of the Indonesian women’s team in the ICC rankings, where they currently rank 22nd out of 55 teams.

“We are delighted at the continuous improvement being shown by both the men’s and women’s teams and seek support as we with the ICC’s help embark on our next journey of growth,” said a visibly delighted Abhiram Singh Yadav, vice chairman of the Indonesian Cricket Association.

Meanwhile, the playoff games of the Indonesian Cricket League were played this weekend with the Daehan Smashers becoming the first team to enter the ICL 2019 finals after comfortably defeating the Yadavas Archean Tigers. The Tigers now get another chance to fight for a place in the finals when they meet the Crickingdom Lions in the semifinals this Saturday.

The Yadavas Archean Tigers chose to bat first against the Smashers and Gede Darma Arta got them off to a brisk start but Karthigai Deepan bowled tight lines. Some wayward running did not help the Tigers as they failed to capitalize on the good start. Kirubasankar bowled a brilliant spell of 4 overs for just 7 runs. Some big hitting by Fernando and Hashmatullah helped the Tigers recover to finish at 129 for 8.

The Daehan Smashers chase got off to a slow start in the face of some tight bowling but Anjar Tadarus extended his dream form and found energy at the right time to bring the Smashers back into the game. After Anjar’s departure, Hariharasudhan kept the chase alive with some frantic running and held his nerve long enough to give his team an easy win.

The Crickingdom Lions took on Jaguar Punjab XI in the quarterfinals. The Lions lost Gufran Khan fairly early yet the Jaguars had an off day in the field, which helped the Lions recover and push forward. Parag Haldankar set the tone and Viraj Bhammar continued the pace. Shubham Patni’s double-strike helped the Jaguars briefly recover but the hard-hitting Sampath Kumar blasted an unbeaten 54 of just 19 balls to take his team to a mammoth score of 223 for 6.

Hanan Khalid threatened with a speedy 32 but Raj Kapadia fought back with a superb five-wicket haul and then Andriaini created her own history by becoming the first woman cricketer to take a four-wicket haul in a JCA tournament as the Jaguars folded for 110.
