N. Sumatra accidents claim three lives on Christmas Day

Two holidaymakers were killed in a multiple vehicle collision and a traffic policeman was killed in a hit-and-run on Christmas Day in North Sumatra.

wo men and a police officer were killed in separate road accidents on Christmas Day in North Sumatra, during the holiday travel season that started last week.

In Serdang Bedagai regency, two were killed died and five others injured in an accident on Wednesday that involved five cars at Kilometer Marker (KM) 58 of the Medan-Tebing Tinggi Toll Road.

Putut Edi Muliono, 57, and Imam Susanto, 26, both residents of the provincial capital of Medan, were killed in the multiple vehicle collision. The two were respectively driving a Mitsubishi L300 pickup truck and a Toyota Innova compact MPV.

Serdang Bedagai Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Robinson Simatupang said that the pileup occurred at 8 p.m. when one of the pickup's tires blew out and the vehicle careened into the toll road barrier. The truck, he added, was transporting sheet glass from Medan bound for Tebing Tinggi.

Edi's Toyota Innova, which was behind the pickup, drove into the truck, and then three other vehicles – a Toyota Avanza, an ambulance and a bus – piled into the rear of the Innova.

Imam and Edi were killed in the collision, while five people riding in the Innova and Avanza were injured.

“The dead and the injured have been taken to a nearby hospital. Traffic was congested last night [because of the accident], but it has returned to normal,” said Robinson.

Separately in Deli Serdang regency, Traffic Police officer Brig. Surianto, 42, was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a hit-and-run while on duty during the Christmas and New Year traffic operation in Tanjung Baru village of Tanjung Morawa district.

Deli Serdang Police spokesman First Insp. Masfan Naibaho said that the Mitsubishi Colt Diesel was speeding from Tebing Tinggi heading toward Medan when the truck driver lost control and hit the Yamaha motorcycle that Surianto was riding.

“The truck driver fled after hitting the victim. Meanwhile, Brig. Surianto was flown [from his motorcycle] and suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs,” said Masfan.

Masfan said that Surianto was take to Lubuk Pakam Hospital for treatment, but died from his injuries.

He added that the police were tracking down the truck driver who fled the scene. (ami)
