If realized, the Batam-Bintan bridge will replace the 5.43-kilometer Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) Bridge in East Java as the longest in the country.
onstruction of a 7-kilometer bridge connecting the islands of Batam and Bintan in Riau Islands province is now waiting for the green light from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, with the detailed engineering design for the bridge already completed.
The infrastructure coordination undersecretary at the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister, Ridwan Djamaluddin, said the Batam-Bintan (Babin) bridge was listed as a strategic project in the government’s 2020-2024 National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
If realized, the bridge will replace the 5.43-km Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) Bridge in East Java as the longest bridge in the country.
"The Babin bridge project is still in progress. The start of construction depends on the President's decision and we're waiting for that," he said when visiting the location for the project on Dec. 28.
He added that the project was waiting for the President to review the detail engineering design and a feasibility study.
The bridge, estimated to cost Rp 7.3 trillion (US$521.42 million), will consist of three sections. The first section at 2.17 km will connect Batam and Tanjung Sauh islands, the second section at 3.9 km will connect Tanjung Sauh and Buau-buau islands and the last 900-meter section will connect Buau-buau and Bintan islands.
In April 2005, the Batam Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) launched the Babin bridge project plan. The authority, in collaboration with the Foundation for Research and Industry Affiliation of the Bandung Institute of Technology, had worked out the design and the feasibility study.
