“If the upstream is damaged and the downstream is clogged that means dead”: Experts take to Twitter to analyze Jakarta's deadly flooding.
akarta experienced the worst and deadliest flood in its history in the first days of 2020. The National Disaster and Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Saturday that the death toll of the recent flooding in Greater Jakarta area and Banten has increased to 60 people, with two people still missing.
Through social media, many experts and observers have been trying to share their insights, experiences and knowledge, hoping that the government, the relevant agencies and the community would listen and work hand in hand to fix the issues.
One of the Twitter threads that went viral came from Bintang Wananda, a junior planner at the National Development Planning Ministry who tried to explain the condition of the rivers in Jakarta, the causes of floods and what the government could do to prevent them in the future.
On Friday through his Twitter handle @pemudajawa, Bintang shared a long thread entitled ‘A deeper analysis of Jakarta's floods’. By Sunday the thread had been retweeted for more than 16,000 times.
