It is a no-brainer, really, that purpose-built venues offering attractive installations and lighting for Instagram pictures have cropped up in large numbers over the past few months.

While interior decor in stores and cafés might offer a spot for snapshots, one venue is offering multiple installations for you to take the perfect shot, helped by claimed Hollywood-style technology to sweeten the deal.

Enter the POZE x Mario Photographie installation exhibition.

Running until Feb. 15, the self-described “selfie museum” is located in NEO SOHO mall in West Jakarta, offering five installations to enjoy and strike a pose at.

Project director Marvin Julian said POZE was a response to the increasing popularity of Instagram-driven tourist sites around the country, though he was quick to differentiate it from other sites.

“Whereas they might focus on creating attractive installations, we wanted to create added value. That’s why we brought in the camera technology and lighting concept,” he said.

The lighting concept was done in collaboration with celebrity photographer Mario Ardi, whose portfolio includes shoots with actresses Bunga Citra Lestari and Jessica Iskandar.

Mario acknowledged the Indonesian obsession with selfies, recounting an experience he had with a group of young women he encountered at an event.

“I was in line to buy a ticket, and they were taking selfies at a spot in the corner. They were still there after I finished queuing, and even after I went downstairs to get something to eat. That clearly shows the long road to one picture online,” he said.

Each installation at POZE has its own distinct concept, but all five fall under the central theme of “Her Dream World”, which puts the female experience at the forefront.

According to Marvin, the focus on women was due to the audience for similar attractions being mostly made up of women, so it was a case of embracing the target market.

“People can come here not only to take pictures, but also to learn something new through the educational side.”

The educational side might not be readily apparent to an observer, but meaning can be found in each installation if you ponder on them long enough.

For example, the “Womanhood” installation features several Roman-esque female statues in pink, reminiscent of the vaporwave esthetics fad of the early 2010s. Each statue holds a different object in its hands, such as a laptop, a beaker and a compact, perhaps signifying the various roles women can play in society.

However, the product placement is rather apparent as well. Sponsored by Pertamina’s liquid petroleum gas brand Bright Gas, “Womanhood” prominently features the brand’s tagline #KelihatanCerdasnya (LookingSmart) along with a literal LPG cylinder, though the cylinder’s bright pink paint and neon cursive does match the decor’s color scheme.

Elsewhere, the installations are relatively straightforward, such as “Intuition Space” which has an intergalactic decor washed in purplish neon evocative of an Ariana Grande music video, or “Mind Sanctuary” with its softer, abstract elements like clouds and arches with metallic balls and poles interspersed.

Prices start at Rp 90,000 (US$6.41) for entrance tickets, but Insta-fanatics can get a VIP ticket for Rp 180,000 to gain access to three photography “experiences”: Slow Mo Cam, Motion Selfie and Light Painting.

Like its name implies, Slow Mo Cam slows down your movement, particularly effective when paired with swishy garments. This feature is exclusive to the “Womanhood” installation.

At “Puzzle Mind”, Motion Selfie captures movement in a photo and reverses it, similar to Instagram’s own boomerang but not limited by your phone’s hardware.

Meanwhile, Light Painting at “Dynamic Chemical” allows the creation of glowing highlights through long exposure, which works well in low light.

If that’s not enough, a Rp 1.5 million package will get visitors 30 minutes with a dedicated photographer team at two installations. With a maximum of five people in one frame, the group will receive 20 high-resolution photos, with two of them edited.

Marvin is optimistic about the appeal of Instagram-oriented venues, saying that these destinations can draw significant interest from Jakarta’s urbanites.

“It actually contributes to the ‘mental scape’ of Jakarta’s citizens, as we barely have any nature in the urban landscape, like mountains and greenery.”
