The honorable mention for Jakarta was based on the success of the capital city’s Transjakarta bus network, which has seen a 200 percent increase in passengers in less than three years, as well as its success in improving the integration of public transportation hubs.
he Sustainable Transport Award (STA) Committee gave Jakarta an honorable mention at the award ceremony for the 2020 Sustainable Transport Award on Tuesday for its efforts in implementing sustainable development in transportation. The city of Pune in India won the main award.
The honorable mention for Jakarta was based on the success of the capital city’s Transjakarta bus network, which has seen a 200 percent increase in passengers in less than three years, as well as its success in improving the integration of public transportation hubs.
Accepting the award at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington DC, the Jakarta secretary’s economic and financial assistant Sri Haryati thanked Jakarta residents and stakeholders in the private sector, with whom the city had formed an effective collaboration.
“This award will be a motivation for Jakarta to further develop integrated transportation systems and become a safe and comfortable place for its residents to live in,” Sri said, as written in a media statement released by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), which was part of the award committee.
The STA was part of the annual conference on transforming transportation, where delegates from the Jakarta administration also presented the development of transportation in Jakarta in a panel session on Thursday.
For 15 years, the STA has given appreciation to cities around the world that have implemented innovative strategies in sustainable urban transportation issues such as mass transportation systems, pedestrian and cyclist facilities and parking management.
In addition to the increase in Transjakarta passengers, Jakarta was also considered successful in integrating the bus system with angkot (minivan) services, as well as implementing its first modern metro system, namely the MRT Jakarta.
