resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has stressed the need for Indonesia to have proper stadiums, transportation systems and accommodation to host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup soccer tournament in 2021.

He also pointed out the need for an efficient transportation system to maintain connectivity between venues throughout the tournament, which will run from May 20 to June 11, 2021.

Indonesia hopes that FIFA will use six stadiums, instead of the four the soccer organization has requested, for the 2021 competition. Indonesia has offered a 10-stadium plan.

The President said he had had received reports on the 10-stadium proposal for the three-week tournament. The 10 candidates consist of six main stadiums and four substitutes.

“I want [local organizers] to seriously check on [the stadiums] by coming to the sites so we’re assured that we will have ones that are proper for international matches.

“We need to make sure that the fields, the bleachers, the changing rooms, the toilets and even the press area are well prepared. If we find any flaws in them and they need renovations, do it immediately. We need them to be really ready for the 2021,” Jokowi said when he opened a select meeting on hosting the cup at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday.

The President went on to say that the local organizers must also provide well-planned transportation and accommodation.
