The city administration temporarily halted the project on Jan. 29 following the Jakarta Council's demand and a public outcry.
he central government and the Jakarta administration have agreed to continue the controversial revitalization project in the southern part of the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta as soon as the city secures required approval.
The decision was made in a meeting of the Medan Merdeka Area steering committee to discuss the fate of the Rp 50 billion (US$3.64 million) project on Wednesday at the State Secretary office in Central Jakarta.
The committee, mandated by Presidential Decree No. 25/1995 to grant permission for any changes to the area, consists of the state secretary as its chairperson, as well as the Jakarta governor, the Public Works and Housing Ministry, the Environment Ministry and several other ministries as members.
The city administration halted the project on Jan. 29 in response to the Jakarta Council’s demand to temporarily stop it until the steering committee granted a letter of approval.
“It must be continued. We [the steering committee] don’t want there to be any stalled project in Monas. We have decided that the project would refer to the presidential decree,” State Secretariat secretary Setya Utama told reporters after the meeting.
He said that Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan should immediately submit details of the design for the revitalization project, including the location for tree replanting to compensate for the trees were chopped down for the project, to secure their approval.
“The Jakarta governor would submit a proposal in accordance with the presidential decree soon, which would later be approved by all members of the steering committee. The Jakarta administration would then be able to continue the revitalization project,” Setya said.
