ovendra Priasmoro has underscored his reputation as a rising star in Indonesia’s chess scene as he earned the grandmaster title with a flawless performance so far at the Liberec Open in the Czech Republic.

The 20-year old grabbed the title after achieving a consecutive seventh win at the tournament on Thursday. Novendra, who has an Elo rating of 2493, defeated International Master Klaudia Kulon (2335) of Poland in round 7, the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Novendra is only the eighth Indonesian to be named a grandmaster, the highest title in chess.

"Prior to Novendra, Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto earned his title about 16 years ago," said Percasi head of development and achievement Kristianus Liem, referring to Indonesia's seventh grandmaster.

Novendra, who is sponsored by heavy equipment distributor PT United Tractors, expressed satisfaction over the new title.

"I have finally earned the grandmaster title, after failing in four previous attempts," he said.

"Previously, I did not make it in two opportunities laid out [for me] at the Praha Open as well as one at the Jakarta Open and another at the World Championships," he added.

In the Czech Republic, Novendra still has two more rounds to play, the first of which will see him take on International Master Akash G (2449) of India. (nkn)
