Dian explained that the bears, a mother and cub, had been roaming throughout the settlement for the past few days. The pair ate seven chickens that belonged to the villagers, causing a stir in the community. The bears are capable of attacking humans when they feel threatened.
“We urge the public to remain calm, stay cautious and contact officers immediately if they see the animals inside the trap or if they appear in other locations,” Dian said.
Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Conservation and Resources Unit head Heru Sutmantoro said he received a report about a conflict between humans and bears on Sunday.
“We received a report that there were two bears that had entered the Kampung Sengkemang settlement in Siak regency,” Heru said. (dpk)
