T

he Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) revealed that at least 86 doctors had died of COVID-19 since the new coronavirus began wreaking havoc in the country.

They either died after testing positive for the disease or while under surveillance, kompas.com reported.

"Here are the doctors who succumbed to COVID-19 in Indonesia from March to August," IDI spokesperson Halik Malik said on Friday, before listing the names.

Among them are a professor at Gadjah Mada University medical school, Iwan Dwi Prahasto, as well as professors from the University of Indonesia's public health school, Bambang Sutrisna and Nasrin Kodim.

Halik said in his previous report in early August that the majority of the doctors were relatively young, ranging between 28 and 39 years old.

They generally had comorbidities, but some of them had no comorbidities at all.

Indonesia had recorded a total of 147,211 COVID-19 cases as of Thursday, an increase of 2,266 from the previous day. The number of fatalities reached 6,418.

The increasing number of cases and deaths showed that the outbreak in the country had yet to be put under control, Halik previously said.

"The government should focus on restoring public health [...] It should optimize testing, tracing, isolating and treatment in all regions." (vny)
