T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has urged the State Palace to report as a gratuity a folding bicycle recently given to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The Executive Office of the President accepted the gift on behalf of the President on Monday. It was given by former TV personality and Damn! I Love Indonesia founder Daniel Mananta as well as Hendra, the CEO of PT Roda Maju Bahagia, which owns the local bicycle brand Element.

The folding bike was custom-made made by Element and clothing label Damn! I Love Indonesia to commemorate this year’s Youth Pledge Day. It retails at around Rp 5 million (US$340.07).

KPK spokesperson Ipi Maryati Kuding said the antigraft agency’s directorate for gratuity reporting had communicated with the presidential office regarding the gift.

“We urge [the presidential office] to report the bicycle if the gift was personally addressed for President Jokowi,” she said on Wednesday.

She noted that the President had 30 days to report the gift after accepting it, as mandated by the 2001 Anticorruption Law. The commission would later determine whether the gift would be given to the intended recipient or seized for state coffers.

Ipi noted that Jokowi had a good track record in reporting personal gifts. The KPK awarded the President for reporting the highest value of gratuities in 2017.

Executive Office of the President secretariat head Yan Adikusuma said the office still had the bike and would report it to the KPK soon. “Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko instructed us yesterday to report it to the KPK.”

Throughout his presidential tenure, Jokowi has received personal gifts from fellow world leaders and other public figures. The most notable one was a limited-edition boxed set of Metallica’s Master of Puppets vinyl from then-Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen during a state visit to Indonesia in 2017.
