akarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria has urged residents of the city to do their part to curb coronavirus transmission by staying at home after the capital recorded more than 100,000 active cases on Wednesday.

“To all Jakarta residents, please stay at home because it is the best place [to avoid catching COVID-19] right now, and [please] strictly follow health protocols,” Ahmad said at City Hall on Wednesday, Wartakota.tribunnews.com reported.

Active cases increased sharply from around 19,000 in mid-June to around 82,000 on July 3, when Jakarta began enforcing emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat), before reaching 100,062 on Wednesday. The number accounts for about 30 percent of active cases nationwide.

Governor Anies Baswedan had predicted the spike, warning last week that citywide active cases would reach 100,000 this week without strict restrictions.

The city administration is scrambling to test for and trace the virus, as well as to treat COVID-19 patients and provide more hospital and ICU beds, oxygen tanks, ambulances, health workers and coffins.

“However, this will all be in vain if residents are not disciplined in following health protocols,” Ahmad said.
