hen her doubles partner at the time Nitya Krishinda Maheswari decided to hang up her racket due to injury in 2017, Greysia Polii was just an inch from doing the same. She thought her career was over and must start to focus on the world outside badminton.
Four years later, the 33-year-old shuttler managed to remove all the doubts hanging over her as she stood at the top of the podium at the Tokyo Olympics with her partner Apriyani Rahayu. Like a true champion, both Greysia and Apriyani showed nothing but perseverance in their journey to gold.
In their final match on Monday afternoon that easily became the center of attention at home, Greysia and Apriyani proved they have what it takes to continue the country’s gold legacy from badminton at the Olympics.
With a strong defense and admirable fighting spirit throughout the match, the world No. 6 pair managed to beat second seed Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan of China in a fierce straight set battle 21-19, 21-15.
