ndonesia has successfully evacuated dozens of people from Afghanistan, including citizens and embassy workers, as well as a number of Filipinos and Afghans, amid a chaotic scramble to leave the country.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi announced on Friday that the government had evacuated 26 Indonesian citizens, five Filipinos and two Afghan nationals.
“Alhamdulillah, the government successfully evacuated Indonesian citizens from Kabul in Afghanistan with an Indonesian Air Forces aircraft,” she tweeted. “The plane is currently in Islamabad [Pakistan] to continue its flight to Indonesia.”
One of the two Afghans is employed by the Indonesian Embassy in Kabul, while the other is the spouse of an Indonesian citizen, the ministry said.
The government previously said it was maintaining a small team of essential staff at its embassy to closely monitor safety and security in Afghanistan.
The move was among the latest round of evacuations initiated by foreign diplomatic missions based in Kabul, which its government vacated last weekend after the Taliban seized control of most of the country.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has since arrived in the United Arab Emirates to seek refuge, agencies reported.
