itbana, a joint venture company of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Singapore’s Surbana Jurong, has unveiled a partnership with Sinar Mas Land to develop a smart mobility solution through an integrated, sustainable and highly accessible public transit service in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) City in South Tangerang, Banten.
Aimed to be implemented as early as next year, the sustainable smart mobility solution will enhance access to public amenities, boost ridership, improve connectivity to downtown Jakarta and reduce the carbon footprint of the planned township development.
The newly announced mobility solution will benefit commuters who currently use the bus and train services at the Intermoda transit hub in BSD City, where a new transit-oriented development (TOD) is underway by he new Sinar Mas Land-Mitbana partnership, named PT Sinar Mitbana Mas. The 6-hectare TOD is located next to the Cisauk Commuter Line train station, which connects to Jakarta’s Sudirman Central Business District and also hosts a bus interchange that serves the greater BSD area.
Gareth Wong, the CEO of Mitbana and president director of Sinar Mitbana Mas, said: “TODs play an important role in alleviating the pressures of a rapidly urbanizing population and promoting public transport options needed for a long-term sustainable future.
“A demand-responsive transit model that eases overcrowding and provides for safer commutes will truly be a game changer, as it lays the foundation for a smart and sustainable public transport infrastructure in BSD City.”
Separately, Sinar Mas Land’s CEO Residential BSD City and Sinar Mitbana Mas vice president director Theodore Thenoch said, “Sinar Mas Land aims to create a future-ready independent township with effective and comprehensive mobility solutions. Public transportation is the long-term plan for better commutes between BSD City and Jakarta to improve BSD City residents’ quality of life.”
He added that the new partnership was taking a bold approach in improving transportation connectivity in the planned township.
A key part of the plan is the introduction of demand-responsive services to connect transfers from trains to the BSD Link bus network, which is operated by Sinar Mas Land.
To realize this, Sinar Mitbana Mas plans to implement a new mobility solution that uses smart algorithms to dynamically adjust bus routes in response to changes in road and traffic conditions as well as demand patterns. In order to provide ease of use for all commuters, the new service will be integrated with Sinar Mas Land’s OneSmile app for the BSD City community. The smart mobility solution will be synchronized with train timetables to enable commuters to better plan their journeys while helping to ease overcrowding on transit services to and from Central Jakarta.
A comprehensive six-month mobility planning study is being conducted by SWAT Mobility, a Singapore-based smart mobility solution firm, to assess the connectivity of BSD Link. Further, SWAT Mobility is running its mobility planning study in collaboration with Singapore’s multi-modal public transport operator, SMRT Corporation.
This collaboration was facilitated by Enterprise Singapore (ESG), a government agency under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry. ESG has connected Mitbana to urban mobility players in the island state that possess the relevant expertise, including SWAT Mobility, to ensure its success.
SWAT Mobility executive chairman and cofounder Arthur Chua, expressed his enthusiasm at collaborating with “forward-thinking partners” like Mitbana and Sinar Mas Land.
“We have an amazing opportunity to position BSD City as a model for sustainable, resident-centric public transport,” he said.
“In Indonesia, SWAT [Mobility’s] technology has been deployed to transfer COVID-19 test samples from neighborhood clinics to central testing facilities in Jakarta and Bekasi. We will draw on our local operating experiences to ensure that our endeavor in BSD City is successful,” Chua added, highlighting his company’s prior achievements in the country.
Meanwhile, ESG assistant CEO Eunice Koh said: “We are pleased to support the efforts of businesses in Indonesia as they work towards achieving [that] nation’s sustainability goals.”
“As more countries, including Singapore, move towards a low-carbon future, the demand for innovative solutions that help minimize its environmental impact will grow,” she said, referring to the new smart mobility project.
“We look forward to more partnerships between Singapore companies and firms across the region to drive the adoption of new technologies that contribute to a more sustainable future.”
