/o:p>The Indonesian Taekwondo Association PBTI) is working on providing better training for athletes, referees and coaches to achieve bigger success at international para taekwondo tournaments.

PBTI executive Anthony M. Siregar said Indonesia had a greater chance to win big at Asian and international taekwondo championships after Muhammad Rizky won a silver medal at the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games in Bahrain.

Para taekwondo is a competition event at the ASEAN Para Games, the Asian Para Games and the Paralympics.

“This is a big opportunity for us, especially since we won silver at the Asian [youth] championships in Bahrain," Anthony said on Jul. 23.

Taekwondo championships on the national stage are planned to be held for the first time at the Para Games in North Sumatra next year, along with the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in North Sumatra and Aceh, he said.

The PBTI had also trained and readied para referees in preparation for future para taekwondo competitions, Anthony added.

In late July, the association held its first training camp for para referees in Yogyakarta, which was attended by 150 professional referees from 20 provinces nationwide.

Anthony said the para referee training program would allow more national and regional para championships to be held on the PBTI’s calendar of events.

The first international para taekwondo championships was held in 2009 in Baku, Azerbaijan. (dre/gev)
