K

enyan runners won both the men’s and women’s divisions of the annual Jakarta International Marathon (JAKIM) on Sunday, which was organized to commemorate Jakarta’s anniversary on June 22.

Geoffrey Kiprotich Birgen led the pack in the men’s category, and his compatriot Kiprop Tonui finished second.

Third place was a case of the more, the merrier, as Kenyans Joseph Mwangi Ngare and Kenneth Kiprop Kipkemoi, as well as Ethiopian Bililign Yimer Ali, tied for the position.

In the women’s division, it was an all-Kenyan affair as the top three finishers were all from the east African nation.

Sheila Jepkosgei Chesang finished first and was followed by her compatriots Careen Cheptoek Mwetich and Shauline Chepkirui Koech.

The marathon started at 4 a.m. at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta and finished at the Bung Karno Main Stadium in the Bung Karno Sports Complex.

The finish line was placed inside the main stadium, the first time in the history of running events in Jakarta, aimed at providing a unique experience for the participants.
