Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with United States Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin on Thursday to discuss opportunities for the countries to coordinate in pursuit of a “free and open” Indo-Pacific and to bolster bilateral ties.
The two-week Indonesian and the United States joint military exercise Garuda Shield officially began with an opening ceremony in South Sumatra on Wednesday, with a dozen nations participating in or observing for the first time the annual event and amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
During a meeting with Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reiterated their support for “Indonesian leadership in the region” as well as “the importance of ASEAN”.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi visited Washington, DC, at the invitation of United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the first such meeting between them since US President Joe Biden took office earlier this year.
