Violent attacks committed by armed civilian criminal groups in Papua over the last 10 years have resulted in the deaths of 78 civilians, 57 National Police members and 62 Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel as well as hundreds of injuries, a report revealed on Tuesday.
The National Police have said they found it difficult to provide assistance to 1,300 people in Banti and Kimbely villages in Tembagapura district, Mimika regency, Papua, who have become hostages of a Papuan separatist group.
Civilians were reportedly on the receiving end of attacks by armed assailants who set kiosks on fire following attacks against security personnel around a mining area operated by PT Freeport Indonesia in Tembagapura, Mimika regency, Papua.
