The recent slight increase in COVID-19 infections and the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak among cattle – which has driven up prices of sacrificial livestock – did not spoil the Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) festivities for hundreds of millions of Muslims who celebrated the holiday across Indonesia on Sunday.
The Batam Cow and Goat Farmers and Traders Association has reported demand for a total of 3,160 cattle and 4,350 goats for the Idul Adha holiday – a third of which have been ordered by Singaporeans.
Scientists have created gene-edited pigs, goats and cattle to produce sperm with traits such as disease resistance and higher meat quality in what they say is a step towards genetically enhancing livestock to improve food production.
