Construction has begun on a new Jesus Christ statue in Sebea-bea Hill in Samosir regency in North Sumatra on Sunday.
A promotional video on the Samosir regency's public relations Facebook page shows that the statue's design is similar to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
The statue was reportedly the brainchild of the Jakarta-based Shine Bright Danau Toba Foundation headed by Sudung Situmorang.

North Sumatra Regent Samosir Rapidin Simbolon, who opened the groundbreaking ceremony, praised the foundation for its initiative. He expects it to be a major tourist attraction in Samosir, a small island on Lake Toba.
Lake Toba is one of the 10 destinations of focus in the government's plan to grow tourism.
However, not everyone approved of the construction as several members of the Pasaribu clan reportedly protested, claiming it was being built on their indigenous land. (wng)
