Garuda Indonesia has launched its latest innovation in flight technology, digital navigation charts.

Using the Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro electronic flight bag (EFB) application in collaboration with Jeppesen Sanderson, Inc., a subsidiary of American company Boeing, Garuda Indonesia reports that the use of digital navigation charts is expected to maximize cost efficiency, reducing costs by up to 59 percent per year by saving on manual navigation charts and potentially saving on aircraft engine maintenance costs.

In a statement, the carrier's operational director Bambang Adisurya Angkasa said, "Digital navigation in flight operational governance is an effort to optimize navigation at Garuda Indonesia while furthering the company's commitment to being a paperless airline.”

"When compared to the previous system, a navigation chart that was only available in hard copy can now be accessed only through an application on a tablet PC," he added.

The digital navigation chart app is also said to be able to improve the security of flights because of the ease of accessing information and data distribution. It displays detailed information that will improve the situational awareness of pilots while inside the cockpit. As a result, communication between operational lines can take place more precisely, accurately and much faster.

In addition, the digital navigation charts are expected to minimize the potential for flight disruption as a result of out-of-date manual data. Thus the workload and preparation time of the pilots while in the cockpit can be reduced.

The process of digitalization itself will be carried out in stages.

For now the implementation of the digital navigation charts is carried out on wide-body aircraft types and 800 pilots have been registered to use a tablet PC that has the digital navigation chart application. (nic/kes)
