T

he Foreign Ministry in Jakarta advises caution for Indonesian citizens in Lebanon in light of the rising tensions fueled by an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed a top commander of Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

“So far there are 145 Indonesian nationals who remain in Lebanon and do not yet want to be evacuated,” ministry director for citizen protection Judha Nugraha said on Wednesday in a press release received by The Jakarta Post.

“Eleven of the Indonesians in Lebanon are located in southern Lebanon, such as Sheeba, Nabatieh, Naqoura and Tyre,” he added.

Southern Lebanon borders Israel and has been a flashpoint of tensions between Hezbollah and Israel since the Gaza war started in October of last year.

Judha urged Indonesians in Lebanon to closely follow as well as any contingency plan issued by Indonesia’s diplomatic mission in Beirut.

Jakarta has so far repatriated 20 Indonesians in batches since early this month after the embassy in Beirut set a level 1 alert for Lebanon.

“The ministry and the embassy are monitoring the situation closely,” Judha said, adding that the ministry is advising against travel to Lebanon and Israel until tensions deescalate.
