P

resident Prabowo Subianto will visit India from Jan. 24-26 and will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

Prabowo will be a guest during events for India's Republic Day and is expected to witness the signing of several agreements on health, education, security and the maritime sector, the ministry said.

Prabowo held a bilateral meeting with Modi on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Brazil in November last year.

During the meeting, the leaders discussed strategic partnerships in various sectors, including health care. Prabowo pointed to Indonesia’s shortage of doctors and suggested that India could help by sending teachers and specialized doctors to train students in Indonesian medical colleges.

On Dec. 2, presidential spokesperson Hasan Nasbi announced that Modi had invited Prabowo to attend the commemoration of India’s Republic Day in January next year.

Earlier in January, Indonesia became a full member of BRICS, a bloc of developing economies increasingly seen as a counterweight to the West.

BRICS was created in 2009 by founding members Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined the following year.

The bloc was expanded again last year with Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates becoming full members.
